A major police operation is currently underway which has left classes of students unable to get home after their school was forced into lockdown.

Dozens of police vehicles swarmed to a residential property on Old Northern Road in Dural, 38km northwest of Sydney, at 12pm on Friday.

No more information is available at this time regarding the nature of the operation.

A New South Wales Police spokesperson declined to comment on the matter for risk of jeopardizing what was already underway.

Officers have closed off Old Northern Road between Mid Dural Road and Cattai Ridge Road as well as the intersection of Old Northern Road and Wylds Road.

Multiple emergency vehicles have positioned themselves outside the address and tactical officers were seen entering the property via a neighbour’s backyard.

The episode has forced a local school in the lockdown area to remain shuttered even after school ended and parents have been told their children are not allowed to leave.

An elderly woman was seen being escorted by police out of a neighbouring address at 12.30pm, Nine News reports.

Officers were seen interviewing her shortly after.

It is unclear at this time if this operation is linked to the discovery of a deceased man one suburb over in Glenorie about 11am on March 15.

Police identified the body as that of John Birch, 39, who was found in a nearby paddock only a few hundred metres from the property currently being surrounded.

Dural residents said they were shocked to see tactical police swarm on their ‘sleepy little town’ on Friday.

‘There has to be at least 20 police in riot gear and masks,’ one person wrote on social media.

‘Was lucky to see a cop car once a month years ago, [let alone] a swat team,’ another added.
